Shaggy Performs After Receiving a Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts at Brown University

Legendary Shaggy the musician receives a honorary PhD from Brown University for is immeasurable contribution to dancehall.


The “It Wasn’t Me” singer was awarded a Doctor of Fine Arts degree from the university at their Providence, Rhode Island location on Saturday, May 28, 2022 and was asked to spice up the convocation ceremony with some of his hit songs.



The Jamaican born artist performed during Brown University’s Class of 2020’s in-person commencement that came after the two year COVID-inspired shutdowns and delays.


The University lauded Shaggy as “not only a pioneering songwriter”, but one who has “used his platform to strengthen his community and homeland”.



Shaggy, whose real name is Orville Richard Burrell, is seven time Grammy Awards nominee and has won twice for Best Reggae Album of the year with Bombastic in 1996 and 44/876 with Sting in 2019. He also won the Brit Award for International Male Solo Artist in 2002.
