Postal Package Theft: Man Tries To Steal Package And Karma Strikes

Caught in the act! A video has been circulating social media but we do not know what exactly happened besides the obvious fact that a man seems to be trying to take a package from someone else's front porch.

In the video, a man who seems to be picking up other people's postal packages from their front door, had the audacity to drive into victim's compound to take a package, but he had no idea that the homeowner had had enough and was waiting with his video camera turned on to capture the shocking incident.

Though the homeowner was lenient and his wife who struggled to grasp the fact that this was reality, said she did not know the emergency telephone number (9-1-1) to call to have him arrested, Karma struck, the man's car was stuck in the snow bank until the Police arrived and arrested him.

Here is what probably happened here. This could be a case of Identity Theft whereby the thief probably used the homeowner's information to apply for a credit card and was using the victim's address as his mailing address as well or he was using the victim's address as his shipping address when he purchases items with other people's credit card information.

What looks like a misdemeanor in the video could be regarded as a felony with immigration issues if the offender is not a citizen of the country.

If there are other mails/packages in the car, the police will conduct further investigation to inspect his home and if they find mails/packages (including empty boxes with name and address labels) belonging to other people who do not live in the house -which means he stole them or stole other people's identity to purchase the items - he would face tougher penalties for this crime.

On September 1, 2019, a new bill was signed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott which aimed to deter offenders by upping the punishment for such crimes.

According to The Texan Tribune: House Bill 37, which goes into effect Sept. 1, criminalizes mail theft, with the penalty ranging from a class A misdemeanor to third-degree felony, depending on the number of addresses mail is taken from. That means the punishment ranges from up to one year in jail and a fine of $4,000 to between two and 10 years in prison and fine of up to $10,000, depending on the number of addresses stolen from. The punishment also increases — and can go up to a first-degree felony — if there's proof an offender intended to obtain someone’s identifying information or steal from the address of a disabled or elderly person.
