Grammy-nominated rapper 21 Savage was arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), early Sunday morning in Atlanta, where he has previously claimed he hails from. However, ICE reportedly says the rapper is actually a U.K National whose visa expired in 2006.

ICE said the rapper whose real name is Shayaabin Abraham-Joseph is a citizen of the United Kingdom and that he came legally into the US on July 2005 as a minor but failed to return back to his country based on the terms of his nonimmigrant visa.

According to TMZ, 21 Savage is reportedly in custody and has "been placed into removal proceedings before the federal immigration courts." ICE will apparently await the "outcome of his case before a judge to determine future actions."

His Attorney Dina LaPolt told TMZ that they are working to secure his release.

"We are working diligently to get Mr. Abraham-Joseph out of detention while we work with the authorities to clear up any misunderstandings," Dina LaPolt said in a statement to CNN.

"Mr. Abraham-Joseph is a role model to the young people in this country, especially in Atlanta, Georgia, and is actively working in the community leading programs to help underprivileged youths in financial literacy."
