Just 3 years ago, Dajerra Becton, 15, who was violently arrested by Texas police at a pool party sparked a lot of outrage about police violence in the black community.
Becton and her family went ahead and sued the city of McKinney, Texas, as well as the violent officer who slammed and pinned her down to the ground with his knee.
According to Star-Telegram, in May 2018, a $148,000 settlement was reached and Becton's lawyer Kim T. Cole promised to throw a "fabulous" pool party for Becton who is now 18 years old and her friends who got detained with her. The pool party will also celebrate her graduation from High School.
“My goal is to redo this experience,” Cole says.
“Dajerria recently told me she hasn’t been swimming since the incident," Cole added.
“This girl will never be the same,” Cole noted. “Anyone who has been a teenage black girl knows how hard it is, and to have this type of negative publicity, in your bikini, shown all over the world. It tore her up. We don’t know who she would have been had this not happened.”
Dajerria said she would love to attend a local community college in the fall and hopes to start a business of her own with the settlement money she received.
