Rev. Father Quits Priesthood After Being Kidnapped

Nigerian Rev. Fr. Gospel Inalegwu who made headlines last year after being kidnapped, has resigned from Priesthood. The resignation came as a shock to members of the church in Kano where he is based.

According to reports, after Rev. Fr. Inalegwu tendered his letter of resignation to the Bishop of Kano Diocese, Most Rev. John Namawzah Niyiring, he packed his belongings and moved out of Kano.

Disturbed by the actions of the younger Priest, Most Rev. John Namawzah Niyiring told reporters that “Priests do not resign as they do in the public service, but are laicized, " stressing that the only authority that could process Rev. Fr. Inalegwu's request was the Holy Father, the Pope.

Rev. Fr. Inalegwu Quits Priesthood

Rev. Fr. Inalegwu who was ordained in Kano State in 2013, was kidnapped last year at his St Joseph Catholic Church, Jitan – Dutse parish, in Tudun Wada Local Government Council, Kano State but was later set free by his captors.

Most Rev. John Namawzah Niyiring added that he tried to persuade the Benue born Catholic priest, to stay but that it seemed like he had already made up his mind.

The senior Priest went further to debunk insinuations that the young Priest's abduction experience influence his decisions, stating that “Long before his kidnap saga, he had voiced out his desire to do what he did. And we have a record of that.”

Just last month we heard the sad news Rev. Fr. Cyriacus Onunkwo who got kidnapped on his way to his father funeral and was killed.

About two months ago, a popular Uyo-based Catholic Priest and radio preacher, Rev. Fr. Patrick Henry Edet, also announced his resignation from the Roman Catholic Church on the air.

Rumors has it that Rev. Fr. Inalegwu has even gotten married after an image that looks like him circulated the internet.
