The U.S. National Security Adviser Michael Flynn abruptly resigned on Monday night, following reports that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence and other top White House officials about his conversations with the Russian ambassador (Sergey Kislyak) to the United States.

Flynn's communication with Russia has been perceived as a blackmail and seems like a breach of the Logan Act, a 1799 law that bars unauthorized citizens from negotiating with foreign governments. However, a senior intelligence official last week told NBC News there had been no finding that Flynn did anything illegal.

"Unfortunately, because of the fast pace of events, I inadvertently briefed the Vice President Elect and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian Ambassador. I have sincerely apologized to the President and the Vice President, and they have accepted my apology," Flynn said in his resignation letter.

Mr. Flynn had previously denied that he had any substantive conversations with Ambassador Sergey I. Kislyak, and Vice President Pence repeated that claim in television interviews as recently as this month.

The 33-year Army veteran serve as the National Security Advisor for barely one month.

The truth of the matter is that it wasn't Flynn's lie that brought him down but the exposure of the lie.
