October 20th was a day of jubilee in the ancient Benin Kingdom in Edo State, Nigeria. Thousands gathered in Benin City, to witness the Coronation of the new Oba (King) of Benin, Oba Ewuare II .

According to tradition, the His Royal Majesty OMO N'OBA NEDO was away for a while in quest of the right name with which he would reign in the Benin Kingdom. The title is passed down from father to first-born son. The new king takes over from his father, Oba Erediauwa I who passedaway earlier this year.

“With international aid and private sector partners, we will save our heritage,” he said, promising in particular to invest in the bronze industry, the kingdom’s pride…I hope to attract tourists, help develop the agricultural industry,” Oba Ewuare II said.

Oba Ewuare II is the 39th King of the Benin Kingdom.

Long live the King! Oba ga tóh kperè!....isé.
