Nigeria: Former Bayelsa State Governor, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha passed away today at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. According to reports, he died of cardiac arrest after being in coma for two day and on life support. He was 62.

He was the Governor of Bayelsa State from May 29, 1999 to December 9, 2005, and was impeached from his office on allegations of corruption.

In 2005, he was arrested in London on charges of money laundry. What was so erie about his case was the fact that he reportedly fled the United Kingdom by disguising himself as a woman. However, Alamieyeseigha denied the allegation.

The British Government unrelenting request for Alamieyeseigha's extradiction back to London for trial, was ignored by the former governor.

Today, his death came to everyone as a surprise. This is a great loss to the Ijaw ethnic group and to many that loved him.

May his soul rest in peace.

Late Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha
