Breaking News: Boston Maraton Bomber Gets Death Penalty

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the only surviving suspect of the Boston maraton bombing of the April 15, 2013 has been sentenced to death by lethal injection.

It took 16 hours over three days for a 12-member jury to reach a verdict on this case.

According to New York Times, Tsarnaev is the first terrorist to be sentenced to death.

"I want to thank the jurors and the judiciary for their service to our community and our country. I hope this verdict provides a small amount of closure to the survivors, families, and all impacted by the violent and tragic events surrounding the 2013 Boston Marathon.

We will forever remember and honor those who lost their lives and were affected by those senseless acts of violence on our City. Today, more than ever, we know that Boston is a City of hope, strength and resilience, that can overcome any challenge,” said Boston Mayor Marty Walsh.

The bombing which was led by Dzhokhar's older brother, Tamerlan, 26, resulted in the death of three people and as many as 230 people injured. Though Dzhokhar, 21, pleaded that he was instigated into taking part in the bombing by his older brother, the court denied his argument.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev was shot dead during a shootout with police after the bombing in 2013 while Dzhokhar surrendered and was convicted.
