Officer Michael T. Slager of North Charleston in South Carolina was arrested and charged with murder on Tuesday after a video surfaced showing him shooting an unarmed black man in the back while the man tried to escaped from the officer.
The victim was 50-year-old Walter Lamar Scott.
Officer Slager, 33, claimed he felt threatened when he pulled out his shun gun, hitting the victim first, before firing eight shots at him for trying to flee.
Luckily, a witness recorded the shooting, - which shows Scott, who was unarmed, running away from the officer before any shots were fired - and released it to news media outlets.
“When you’re wrong, you’re wrong,” North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey said during the news conference. “And if you make a bad decision, don’t care if you’re behind the shield or just a citizen on the street, you have to live by that decision.”
North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey announced the charges at a hastily called news conference in which he said City Patrolman Michael Thomas Slager made "a bad decision."
Warning the extremely graphic video shows the police officer handcuffing Scott's lifeless body with his face down in the dirt.
