Ferguson Jury: No Indictment For Police Officer In Michael Brown's Death

After nearly three months of investigation and deliberation, a St. Louis County grand jury has declined on Monday not to indict Darren Wilson, the white police officer whose fatal shooting of Michael Brown, lead to the death of the an unarmed black teenager, on a street in Ferguson, Missouri, in August.

Based on the verdict, Wilson, 28, will not face any state charges in the August shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown. Although a parallel federal civil rights investigation of the shooting is continuing, federal investigators have all but concluded they do not have a case against Wilson, either, law enforcement officials have said.

After a two day deliberation, the grand jury, consisting of nine white jurors and three black jurors, decided by majority NOT to indict Officer Wilson.

As soon as the jury's decision was made public, shots were fired outside police headquarters as the decision touched off an immediate and angry response.

Protesters pelted officers with bottles, and police in riot gear ordered a crowd of several hundred people to disperse. St. Louis County police said they were sending out tactical units, deploying smoke to break up unruly crowds and responding to reports of looting nearby.

President Barack Obama, speaking from the White House while the clashes were erupting in Ferguson, called on both sides to exercise restraint and accept the decision of the grand jury.

“We are profoundly disappointed that the killer of our child will not face the consequence of his actions,” Brown's family said. The family also asked that protesters remain peaceful.
