Olympic Champion Swimmer Michael Phelps Apologizes For DUI Arrest

Olympic champion swimmer, Michael Phelps was arrested for driving while under the influence early Tuesday morning in Baltimore, Maryland.

According to the police statement, Phelps, 29, also was charged with excessive speed and crossing double lane lines within the Fort McHenry Tunnel on I-95 in Baltimore, the Maryland Transportation Authority Police said. Police say he was driving 84 mph in a 45-mph zone.

An officer spotted Phelp's 2014 white Land Rover speeding and followed it through the tunnel at about 1:40 a.m. The officer stopped the car just beyond the toll plaza, and identified Phelps as the driver by his license and noted that the 18-time gold medalist "appeared to be under the influence."

"He was unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests," the police statement reported.

However, Phelps was very cooperative throughout the process and was later released.

In a prepared statement released through Phelp's agent, he wrote "Earlier this morning, I was arrested and charged with DUI, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines. I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility. I know these words may not mean much right now but I’m deeply sorry to everyone I have let down." Phelps also tweeted the statement on his social media accounts to show how deeply sorry he was.

Good thing he took responsibility for his own actions, unlike Justin Bieber and other celebs that are constantly antagonizing authorities. This shows how much he respects his fans and as a role model, this is is best option to retaining his dignity. We hope he learns from this. This is Phelp's second DUI arrest, for those of you who don't know. If it happens a third time, then he might need 'serious help' like checking himself into a Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center.
