The brain is considered the most vital organ in the body. It is the center of the nervous system in all vertebrate and most invertebrate animals. So powerful, it exert centralized control over the other organs of the body. The brain also regulates other parts of the body by generating patterns of muscle activity or by driving secretion of chemicals called hormones.
It's okay to forget things every now and then. However, as we age, forgetfulness could signal some serious health issues.
Often times we notice that it's almost difficult for the elderly to recollect simple details such as a person’s name, the name of their pets, or the name of their favorite movies. The good news, though, is that significant memory loss is not an inevitable part of aging.
But, by adopting simple lifestyle choices, we can reduce our chances of memory loss in the future. This is why we have to start increasing our brain power by practising these 7 everyday habits.
Meditate: Meditation has been known to increase IQ, relieve stress, and promote higher levels of brain functioning. It is also known to energizes the “prefrontal cortex” of the brain, an area responsible for advanced thinking ability and performance.
Mediterranean-style diet: Stay away from junk food. As the saying goes, "you are what you eat." The Mediterranean diet comprises of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, olive oil and mixed nuts. The food is rich in fiber and discourages eating refine sugar. According to studies, following the style of diet, helps to boost the brain power of the elderly.
Exercise Regularly: Working out regurlarly helps relieve stress, keeps your mind and body healthy. Being physically active is important in maintaining a steady blood flow to the brain and encouraging the development of new brain cells.
Pick up a hobby: What do you do at your leisure time? Do you love volunteering, reading, gardening, or traveling? Having a hobby can atcually keep you calm, fit and improve your mood. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, continuous learning appears to be protective against some forms of dementia, possibly because brain cells and their connections with one another become stronger over time. Thus, staying curious, involved and committed to lifelong learning are ways to grow brain cells.
Socialize: Get a life! "All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy." Expanding and keeping good social ties can strengthen your brain cells, which can build and sustain cognitive power.
Quit Smoking: Cigarette smoking is the number one cause of preventable disease and death worldwide. Research shows that smoking can damage brain function at anytime. The decrease in brain power is linked to the damage that smoking does to the heart. Remember, it's never to late to quit!
Have sex: Having sex is a great way to naturally release vital hormones in the brain. When involved in a loving relationship, having sex improves social connection as well as emotional intelligence. It is connecting, stress-relieving, and a great way to give your brain a boost. Chances are that sex will also improve your confidence and ability to think positively!
